Aerial yoga is a new fitness trend that is sweeping the nation. You will find studios and classes popping up all over the place. Just like any traditional land yoga class, you will also see various types of classes being offered such as Restorative, Hatha, Vinyasa, etc.
Who is it for?
New to yoga or an experienced yogi? It doesn’t matter, it is designed for all skill levels. It will challenge even the most experienced yogini and also allow the most inexperienced person to follow along. I would, however, recommend taking a basic land yoga class before jumping into aerial yoga. The reason I suggest this is because combining two foreign concepts can be pretty intimidating. So, before signing up for your first aerial yoga class be sure you have a basic understanding of yoga.
What to Expect
Get ready to feel challenged. In all honesty, your first class will be a challenge, but it is incredibly fun and you get to spend a lot of time in inversions. Try not to feel intimidated. In general, the instructors are incredibly mindful of how uncomfortable aerials can be for the first time. The class itself will be quite similar to a traditional yoga class, as you will go through traditional movements like downward dog, pigeon, etc., but with the use of an aerial sling or silk. The instructor will always demonstrate how the sling or silk will be used to assist you in the various movements.
Why Aerial Yoga?
So, yoga is already challenging. Why in the heck would you want to take it in the air? Simply put, it is a whole new level of intensity. It also can benefit your body in an entirely new way. Hey, it also keeps fitness fun and interesting. Try it for yourself and if you don’t like it try it a second time just to be sure.
