8 Simple Tips to Eating Healthy on a Budget

  1. Buy in Season – When it comes to produce do your homework and know when things are in season. If produce is in season it’s usually cheaper.
  2. Buy in Bulk – It is generally cheaper to buy in bulk. When possible buy produce and responsibly sourced meats in bulk. Be sure to do your math first to make sure it is a cheaper option.
  3. Freeze – If you are buying in bulk, try to buy produce and meats that are good to freeze, you can then thaw them out and use them at a later date so none of your groceries are going bad before you can use them. Some of my favorites to freeze for later; zucchini, spaghetti squash, tomatoes, and herbs.
  4. Farmer’s Markets – When ever possible visit your local farmer’s market. Normally the produce will be fresher and you can find discounts on tasty locally grown produce.
  5. Know What is on Sale – Each week when you are planning your meals, be sure to check what is on sale first. Plan your meals around sale items to cut costs.
  6.  Make Friends With Your Local Butcher Shop – If you are a meat eater you should seek to get friendly with your local butcher shop. This way you are the first to know about any upcoming sales or specials.
  7. Garden – Even if you only have space for a small herb bed, start a garden! Growing your own produce is a great way to save some major dough.
  8. Meal Planning – Every week aim to plan out your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. By planning your meals you will be less likely to allow anything to go to waste, as everything you will prepare will be set a side for a certain meal.
